Without any reference whatsoever to the school/classroom massacres that have become frequently recurring events in modern American history (and elsewhere), Tina Turner sang a movie song once that had as its key lyric: “We don’t need another hero.” Borrowing from her, I want to say as loudly as I can that if losing one’s life protecting classmates from angry, insane gun toters (as the brand new NRA president refers to her present and future constituents) is what it takes to confirm heroism in our lawless era, “We don’t need another hero.”
The Silverside Church family expresses our deepest sympathies to the robbed, ruptured families of Riley Howell and Kendrick Castillo with promises of prayers and positive thoughts as they travel painful grief journeys for the rest of their lives. And what of the joys and adventures stolen for no good reason at all from young Mr. Castillo and young Mr. Howell? Lost so violent women and men and especially those who make lots of money pandering to the gun toters can simply gain fatter bank accounts.
Those who tell us that if we really care we will do whatever it takes to control weapons are exactly right.
